[News] N-Power Disengagement Of 200,000 Volunteers

After three years of their recruitment into the N-Power Scheme, the federal government is set to exit 200,000 of the beneficiaries from the programme. Their disengagement will take place between January and February this year, LEADERSHIP has learnt.

Some officials of the National Social Investment Office (NSIO) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, operators of the scheme confirmed the development in Abuja, yesterday.

They said that the 200,000 persons to go were among 500,000 young Nigerians recruited by the federal government for the N-Power programme in 2016.

It was gathered that they were being dropped from the scheme because there was no budgetary provision for them in the 2020 national budget.

The youth empowerment programme was created by the federal government with a focus on large-scale skill development for employment and social development. The beneficiaries were recruited in two batches: Batch A: 200,000 and Batch B: 300,000 in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

A top official of NSIO told LEADERSHIP that the time had come for the affected 200,000 beneficiaries to go, as he repeatedly said: “But they must go. They have to go. Government cannot sustain it. Government has to graduate some so that they can enroll other people too.”

The source said that the management of NSIO had already prepared an exit plan for the exiting beneficiaries after spending 16 extra months for the two-year programme. They were reportedly paid nine months of the extra time.

It was further gathered that the exit plan is currently waiting the approval of the minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed.

Also a source in the presidency explained that the first batch of 200,000 were supposed to leave the internship scheme before now, adding that they were left on the payroll because of the 2019 general elections because that was not the right time to disengage the.

“Their exit time fell on 2018 which was election period. So, it will not be wise for the government to be sacking 200,000 people on the eve of the general elections. Politically, it’s not wise. That’s why the programme stretched till this time. They have even stayed nine months extra on the payroll.

“The truth is that they don’t even have allocation for them in the 2020 budget and because of that, they will not be paid. They will exit them this January or so,” the source said.

The beneficiaries were to have graduated from the N-Power after two years of internship but they stayed longer for another 16 months on the government’s payroll, he said.

Disengagement Plans

Commenting on the disengagement plan for the Batch A members, the source explained that the federal government is looking for a soft-landing for them, adding that the aim was to ensure that they were not pushed into the labour market without any empowerment.

Part of the plan, according to him, is to allow the participants access to loans of between N30,000 and N100,000 to start up small and medium scale businesses.

The source added that federal government officials were already meeting with the state governments that benefited from the N-Power Agro, N-Power Health, N-Power Teach, N-Power Community Education, and N-Power Health workers to absorb or engage those that had been productive.

It was also learnt that the government plans to liaise with private sector employers and other public institutions such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the police to absorb some of them since they had acquired about three years’ experience in various areas.

Another source disclosed that the government plans to enlist some of them into the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme (GEEP) being run by the Bank of Industry (BoI) to give them loan facilities.

[Tech] Phones To Avoid If You Live In Nigeria - Phones

Nigeria has a lot of Nigerians in it. So many (179 million) that if you took half of them out of the country, Nigeria would still have the highest population of any African country.
The Nigerian phone market in recent times has become saturated with fake phones and many unsuspecting buyers have been scammed into buying fake phones for the price of an original one. Fake phones especially Android phones have become so rampant that one wonders if phone dealers are deliberately taking advantage of their customers.

I noticed that most of the fake phones in the market are the so called ‘UK or London Used Phones’ and fairly used phones, there are also fake new phones but they don’t seem to be as many as the used phones.

Most of these fake phones match the original phones almost exactly in design and since most phone buyers are not tech savvy, they are very easily deceived. Many people do not know they bought a fake phone until after a while when they probably meet someone with the original version of the phone and find huge differences between their phone and the original. Even small phones popularly called ‘Torchlight phones’.
Before you hurriedly buy or upgrade to a new phone, here are some things to consider:

By Ayodele Efunla

Buying phones from roadside sellers or unauthorised outlets goes with a lot of risks as experiences of many patrons of such unregistered dealers have confirmed.

Complaints of overheating, battery malfunctioning and many more are on the increase. Some, including very expensive smartphones, break down irretrievably almost immediately after purchase.

Therefore, before you buy phone, here are some things to consider:

1. Don’t buy phones which parts are not readily available in Nigeria.

2. Avoid buying used or second-hand smartphones either from the roadside or from an unregistered outlet. Failure to exercise this caution may lead to regret. You may also be unknowingly buying a stolen phone. Buying a new smartphone will ensure that you know the phone’s history and it comes with a battery that has long lifespan.

3. Don’t buy a phone you cannot afford its parts in case you want to repair. Don’t let competition or peer pressure push you. Live within the boundary of your income .

4. Don’t rush to buy a newly introduced phone. If you wait for a few months, you would discover that the price will crash.

5. Avoid phones that are not designed for the Nigerian weather.

6. Phones which the operating system will no longer be supported in 2020, such as Blackberry phones, iPhone running iOS 8 or older ones, should be avoided.

[News] Anthony Joshua beats Andy Ruiz by unanimous decision in their rematch (photos, video)

British fighter Anthony Joshua has reclaimed his heavyweight titles six months after initially losing them to Andy Ruiz.
The 30-year-old Watford-born boxer emerges victorious at the end of the 12th round in the bout having amassed more points than his opponent.

Joshua won the fight Two cards have it 118-110, the other 119-109.

This time in Diriyah, in a purpose-built 15,000-seat arena, there had been a downpour in the desert but a disaster for Joshua was averted by his most disciplined and controlled performance to date.

Anthony Joshua reclaimed the world heavyweight championship in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night by outclassing Andy Ruiz Jr over 12 rounds.

Joshua gained revenge for his nightmare in New York earlier this year, when he fell four times in defeat to Ruiz Jr, by winning a unanimous decision in their rematch and clawing back the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.

He came into the rings as a challenger but returned as the champion having tasted defeat for the first time in his career earlier this year.

Joshua drew blood from Ruiz Jr in the earliest exchanges – he immediately seemed far more relaxed than during the ill-fated first fight and fired a swift right hook which did the damage.

But Joshua then suffered a similar cut in the second round, above his eye, although he remained poised and unhurt.

Joshua was able to keep the shorter and heavier Ruiz Jr at his preferred range by moving quickly on his back foot, and flicking out a jab whenever the champion tried to creep forwards.

Ruiz Jr finally had success at the end of the fourth round when an overhand right crashed home. Joshua felt it, and the bell came at a good time for him.

But still Joshua was still able to execute his game-plan, geed on by Rob McCracken, the long-serving trainer in his corner who he unequivocally backed after the first fight. At his lightest ever for a world title fight and 10lbs lighter than the first fight, the Brit had enough to gas to keep Ruiz Jr at bay.

Joshua landed a strong left hook in the sixth but Ruiz Jr would not be dissuaded from plodding forwards and threatening his own punches. The build-up to this fight had been respectful but, at the end of the sixth, Joshua shot a spiteful stare when Ruiz Jr threw two illegal punches.

Mexico’s first ever heavyweight champion, by the seventh, was getting frustrated and the referee admonished him for more illegal shots.

They went toe-to-toe for the first time moments later, in scenes reminiscent of the first fight when Joshua fell, but this time he remained firm.

Ruiz Jr’s eyes lit up in the eighth round when he landed hard punches to the side of Joshua’s head. There was a collective intake of breath at ringside but Joshua did not go down. Joshua then had to absorb even more in the ninth.

It was Joshua’s skill and finesse (although he crashed a right hand home in the final round) that ultimately made him a two-time heavyweight champion, joining esteemed company such as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis in reigning again after suffering defeat.

Two scores of 118-110 and another of 119-109 meant the world titles returned to Joshua, who celebrated with his family and embraced Ruiz Jr after the decision.

People with chained legs are pictured after being rescued by police in Sabon Garin. (photo credit:" STRINGER/ REUTERS)
The raid occurred on October 12 in Sabot Gar, in the Katsina state. Police issued a statement on Monday and said they were working to reunite the victims with their families.
MAIDUGUIRI, Nigeria - Police in northern Nigeria rescued nearly 70 men and boys from a second purported Islamic school where they were shackled and subjected to "inhuman and degrading treatments."

The raid in Katsina, the northwestern home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, came less than a month after about 300 men and boys were freed from another supposed Islamic school in neighbouring Kaduna state where they were allegedly tortured and sexually abused.

"In the course of investigation, sixty-seven persons from the ages of 7 to 40 years were found shackled with chains," Katsina police spokesman Sanusi Buba said in a statement. "Victims were also found to have been subjected to various inhuman and degrading treatments."

The raid occurred on October 12 in Sabon Garin in the Daura local government area of Katsina state. Police issued a statement on Monday and said they were working to reunite the victims with their families.
Lawal Ahmad, a 33-year-old who was held captive, said he witnessed sexual assault, beatings and the death of other captives during his two years there.

"They were just beating, abusing and punishing us every day with the name of teaching us," he said through tears, adding "they are not teaching us for the sake of God."

Police arrested one man, 78-year-old Mallam Bello Abdullahi Umar, for running what they called an "illegal detention/remand home."
Lawai Musa, a trader who lived near the centre, told Reuters by phone that families sent unruly men and boys there believing it was an Islamic teaching facility that would straighten them out and teach them Islamic beliefs.

"The way he is treating the children is un-Islamic" he said. "We are not happy, they were treated illegally."

Islamic schools, known as Almajiris, are common across the mostly Muslim north of Nigeria. Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a local organisation, estimates about 10 million children attend them.

In June, President Buhari, himself a Muslim, said the government planned to ban the schools, but would not do so immediately. After the incident in Kaduna, the president issued a statement calling on traditional authorities to work with government to expose "unwanted cultural practices that amount to the abuse of children."

Buhari's office declined to immediately comment on the Katsina raid, saying it would issue a statement after a full briefing from police.

"The command enjoins parents to desist from taking their children/wards to illegal, unauthorized or unapproved remand/rehabilitation centres," the police statement said.

Works of E.A.GRAHAMS

What are our scientists and researchers doing regarding the explosiveness of gas which is becoming rampant with days and gas consumption and displacement of kerosene in our kitchens increasing with alarming alacrity?.What are our Nigerian students in the fields of science and research doing to quell the tide? A university is a centre of research, specialization and development.A post-primary school is a step off the basics which is structured to ask questions why  absurdities, excesses and laxities happen, carry out hypothesis, tests and proffer solutions. Our science students in the secondary schools are not left out too. Most of the inventors and innovators we read about today achieved their feats at a very incredible age.If bombs can be detonated, water can be made to travel up-tank beating the gravitational pull and drags and hiccups,if ships can float on seas,if Orville and Wilbur Wright the two American brothers in the early 20th century can cause an aircraft have a walk in the air with all its density of structure and passengers, why are our researchers yet to think of or come up with what to make stay mild or detonate the explosive potency of gas.Everyday, explosions are happening next door ,lives are lost, properties worth millions go down the drain and plaaaa!the same time, thousands of Nigerians are sending their stoves into the refuse dumps and picking up a cylinder from the nearest shop, opening doors to more untimely deaths, maims and blames. If gas cannot behave well in our hands. If we cannot culture gas to be an animal of co-existential harmonics with man,why then do we go for what we cannot handle? Why do we go for what will pause our breaths into a corpse and leave the entire mundo of our dependencies in infinitessimal lagrima? Why then do we go for what will leave us homeless, wifeless, fatherless, husbandless, motherless, employerless, employeeless and childless? It makes me wanna cry when everyday I look out through my window and see underaged kids with gas cylinders on their heads, their hands even their backs  doing let's go dancing uhlalalaa..It worries me knowing that those children are sitting on a carbide tank explosive idiotic of a bombshell and I always ask "ndi muru umuaka a amakwa ife fa na eme"(are the parents of these kids in compos mentis of what they do) It frightens me to know that the parents of those kids on their own willingly gave their kids a lethal letter of legal suicide to go die on the mount and in the vale. Admittedly, life is a risk on its own covert or overt but it has always being an admissible age-long practice to throw a block of moderation,a block of precaution and a block of abstinence to a flood that can wash our feet off course.
If our generators still make noise causing environmental havoc in the neighbourhood. If it still sends out toxic carbon (ii)oxide same as we get from an exposed sewage tank  leading to the death of many.If our cars still queue on congested roads for hours without an option of flying-off the spot and landing elsewhere where the road is freer to continue on its acceleration, then science, technology, innovation and research is still lying cold and sleeping old like a scolded log.

[News] Xenophobia: Air Peace to evacuate stranded Nigerians from S/Africa

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that following the recent unfortunate xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians in South Africa, the Proprietor of Air Peace Airlines, Chief Allen Onyema, has volunteered to send an aircraft from Sept. 6 to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return to Nigeria free of charge.
“The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture.

“Interested Nigerians are, therefore, advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement,” Nwonye said.

Earlier, the Airline had offered to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa following the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners living in the country.

The airline made this known in a letter by its Chief Operating Officer, Mrs Oluwatoyin Olajide, addressed to Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Olajide said the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa was unfortunate, adding that the airline could not fold its hands and watch Nigerians being killed by the South Africans.

She said: “To this end, Air Peace is willing to support the Nigerian Government’s efforts in this matter by deploying our B777 aircraft to evacuate Nigerians back home.

“We humbly plead with the Federal Government to inform the Nigerian Embassy and the South African Government to rescue the stranded Nigerians by transporting them to the airport to allow Air Peace evacuate them to Nigeria.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government had recalled its Ambassador to South Africa, Kabiru Bala, and pulled out of the World Economic Summit holding in Cape Town.

The government had also issued travel advice to Nigerians intending to visit South Africa due to the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.

This followed the recent Xenophobic attack on Nigerians in South Africa on Sunday, which had left several Nigerians stranded and seeking refuge.

The intervention from Air Peace Airline is therefore a ray of hope for many Nigerians seeking to return home to safety.

[News] NANS Members Attack Each Other Over Free

However, trouble started when President of NANS, Danielson Akpan, and other executive members stormed the South African High Commission and claimed to be the authentic representatives of students in Nigeria.
The students Unions of the National Association of Nigerian Students on Wednesday in Abuja engaged each other in a brawl over plans by the South African High Commission to sponsor some of them to the country.

President of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Bello Shagari, who led the group, was in company with the President of Students Union Government of the University of Abuja.

Acting South African High Commissioner, Bobby Moroe, after a meeting with the students’ leaders said his country was planning to engage Nigerian youth on a cultural exchange visit.

He said the motive behind the visit was to further tighten the existing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.

Moroe noted that the trip would enable the NANS members meet with their South African counterparts as part of measures to resolve attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

However, trouble started when President of NANS, Danielson Akpan, and other executive members stormed the South African High Commission and claimed to be the authentic representatives of students in Nigeria.

He said those invited for the meeting were impostors and not the executive members of NANS.

He berated the group for tarnishing the image of the student union and for accepting such offer while their compatriots were being killed in South Africa.

Akpan’s faction thereafter descended on members of the other group, who had been inside the high commission building early.

It took the timely intervention of the police to arrest the situation.

[Gist] ‘Chris Brown was superior than Davido in the song Blow My Mind’ – Oma Akatugba

Nigerian sports journalist, Oma Akatugba has stated that the new song by Davido titled “Blow My Mind” featuring Chris Brown really showed he is way below the US singer’s league.

The song which dropped free weeks ago has received mixed reactions from Nigerians who felt both singers do not match.

Adding his opinion to the criticism the song has received, Oma Akatugba stated that Chris Brown brought a clear difference the moment his verse on the song came on.
He tweeted:

“I just watched “blow my mind” video by Davido and Chris brown. The moment Chris brown entered, you just know the difference. Shoe really get size ooo”.
